These are excellent starting points for designing any categorization scheme. The design process, though, should facilitate the human navigation and translation process. We need to consider all of the categorization schemes that our community might be accustomed to working with every day. We should consider the underlying design principles of these other schemes and how those communities use them.

A significant design challenge for categorization schemes is that we often fail to teach individuals how to design them. We teach them how to interpret and apply them but not how to discover their underlying principles. If we encounter problems in applying a categorization scheme, it is often because the scheme’s fundamental design principles were not well articulated or followed over time.
